The Vision
2Ports is an original sporting concept developed by Alan Weston Straton to celebrate the maritime and industrial heritage of Algoa Bay. Unlike other regional races that carry ocean-themed names, 2Ports is defined by a powerful geographical truth: Algoa Bay is home to two working, world-class ports.
This event is a physical transit between these two distinct maritime anchors, creating a unique “point-to-point” challenge that connects the historic city with the modern industrial frontier.
The Tale of Two Harbours
The 2Ports challenge bridges two iconic, yet contrasting, maritime environments:
The Port of Port Elizabeth in Gqeberha: The “Historic Gateway” and city heartbeat. Established in 1820, this port represents the city’s rich cultural evolution and serves as the ideal urban start point due to its direct access to the beachfront and city center.
The Port of Ngqura (Coega): The “Deepwater Industrial Giant”. As South Africa’s newest and deepest container port, it offers a high-intensity, industrial-aesthetic backdrop. With the longest breakwater in South Africa, it stands as a testament to modern engineering and represents the expansive finish line of the race.
A Multi-Sport Challenge
2Ports is not merely a race; it is a test of versatility. The event encompasses running and cycling, with a vision to eventually incorporate a “Land vs. Sea” challenge. By bridging these two hubs, we offer participants an intuitive, epic, and rugged journey that mirrors the actual maritime function of our bay.
Our Commitment
We are proud to showcase the beauty of Algoa Bay. Given the proximity of our route to sensitive marine areas—including the St. Croix and Jahleel Island groups—we are committed to hosting an environmentally conscious event that aligns with the conservation efforts of the region.
